NEC LifeTouch Android tablet gets the hands-on treatment

The Fujitsu LifeTouch is a 7 inch Android tablet with an 800 x 480 pixel display, an ARM A8-based CPU, and a rather large number of buttons to press. We saw a few rendered pictures of the tablet last week, but now there’s a video making the rounds showing the LifeTouch tablet in the flesh plastic.

It turns out the tablet has even more buttons than I thought, although the D-pad seems to have been replaced by four directional buttons. There are also buttons for power, home, menu, and back functions, amongh other things.

The tablet is running Google Android 2.1 and includes 802.11b/g WiF and Bluetooth 2.1. There’s also an accelerometer for rotating the display, GPS, and a 3MP camera.

NEC has loaded some custom software on top of Google Android, and the tablet is apparently aimed at businesses looking to customize their own software. NEC isn’t expected to offer the tablet directly to consumers. Instead, businesses may offer tablets to their clients. That said, the video below shows the device acting as a comic book reader, video player, and all sorts of other functions that look awfully consumer friendly to me.

Chinese iPad knockoffs: From aPad to iPed

There’s no shortage of iPad knockoffs coming out of China these days. Like most, the iPed, which also seems to go by the name of the aPad, runs Google Android and seems to have a sluggish processor and limited storage. Watching the user open the app drawer is a bit like watching paint dry.

But there’s at least one reason to consider this knockoff a cut above the rest: It appears to have full access to the Android Market, which means you can easily install tens of thousands of third party apps. That’s something that most Android tablets can’t do out of the box — even though it’s a basic feature of most Android smartphones. And on the bright side, it looks like you can pick one up for about $150 or less.

The folks at ChinaGrabber have posted a few videos of the iPed/aPad, including one showing off the Android Market. You can check out the videos below, as well as a news report showing the tablets in their natural environment: in Chinese electronics shops.

The appearance of white light, Shenqingruyan, has always sought after by the cottage manufacturers, this product gives companies the wholesale price is lower than 1,600 yuan, the price of civilians, and 13.3-inch 1700 + approved the current price compared 11.6-inch, or very cost-effective advantage.
Interface layout, with two standard USB interface, LAN interface, headset and Mini HDMI interfaces. Have a direct LAN port configuration, do not like the previous white, multi-adapter with a USB network card.

Ben Wang cottage Note Editor's Note: Xiaobian me wonder why the market 11.6-inch Apple, do not many businesses. Some time ago, Shenzhen Rui start Iridium Star start this machine without extra month of time, not many follow-up of the company. This mold is modified from the original 12-inch classic "Little White One", the narrow 11.6-inch screen size, the battery out to do a little more convenient. Logically speaking, this 11.6-inch Tingzhi manufacturers have to do, but very strange, not at the desired results

eBook readers continue slide toward tablethood: Social Networking on the Kindle

Devices with e-Ink displays that take a second or two to refresh are never going to replace full color screens capable of handling video playback and dynamic web content. But while smartphones and tablets like the Apple iPad are becoming serviceable eBook readers thanks to software such as iBooks and the Amazon Kindle Reader, dedicated eBook devices are sliding toward tablethood.

Last week the Barnes & Noble Nook received a firmware update that adds a web browser and support for a few third party apps. And a hacker figured out how to root the Spring Designs Alex eBook reader, providing access to the core settings and file system that run the device.

Today, Amazon has started rolling out a firmware update for the Kindle eBook reader which adds support for Twitter and Facebook, allowing you to share book passages with your contacts on the social networking sites.

The Kindle 2.5 software also adds the ability to organize your books and other documents into collections, pan and zoom functionality for PDF files, the ability to lock your Kindle with a password when it’s not in use, and more font sizes and sharper fonts. You can also see “popular highlights,” which show you what other Kindle users think are the most highlight-worthy passages in the book you’re reading.

Archos 5 Internet Tablet — now with paid apps from the Android Market

Archos 5 with Android Market (without paid apps)

One of my biggest problems with tablets running Google’s Android operating system is that they don’t ship with the ability to do one of the most basic things any Android smartphone can do: Download third party apps from the Android Market. Sure, Archos, Camangi, and other tablet makers load up their tablets with useful apps and sometimes even give you access to third party app stores. But none have anywhere near the more than 50,000 apps available from the Android Market.

But there is a way to install a hacked version of the Android Market on the Archos 5 Internet Tablet. Not every app will work out of the box if you use the Market4Archos hack, because the tablet simply doesn’t have all of the same hardware found on most Android smartphones. But the hack certainly turns the Archos 5 from a glorified audio and video player into a truly useful device capable of running thousands of apps.

One glaring omission was paid apps. Up until recently, if you installed the Android Market on the Archos 5, you could download free apps from the Market, but not apps that you have to pay for. Then last week Archos released a new version of the firmware for the Archos 5 Internet tablet. And users started to report that when they upgraded to firmware version 1.7.99 paid applications started to appear in the Android Market.

As Jenn at Pocketables points out, the crazy thing here is that even some smartphones can’t download paid apps from the Android Market unless they’re connected to a 3G mobile wireless network. if you take the SIM card out of a Google Nexus One, for instance, you lose access to paid applications from the Android Market.

The Asus Eee PC T91 is an 8.9 inch netbook with a touchscreen display on a swivel, allowing you to use the netbook in tablet mode. It comes with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor, GMA 500 graphics, a 1024 x 600 touchscreen display

The Asus Eee PC T91 is an 8.9 inch netbook with a touchscreen display on a swivel, allowing you to use the netbook in tablet mode. It comes with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor, GMA 500 graphics, a 1024 x 600 touchscreen display, and a 802.11b/g/n WiFi module. But if you’re looking for a little more connectivity, you might want to add a 3G modem.

Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as snapping in a PCI Express card, but it is possible if you’re comfortable taking apart a netbook and going at the insides with a sodering iron.

Jkkmobile did exactly that, and he’s posted a video showing just how to go about installing a 3G modem. He says one of the tricky parts is actually opening up the laptop, since Asus didn’t include any access panels for accessing the storage or wireless modules on the base of the netbook. You can check out Jkkmobile’s video on upgrading the SSD in the Eee PC  T91 for instructions on how to remove the cover

The Asus Eee Keyboard is finally available for pre-order in the US. But at $599

The Asus Eee Keyboard is finally available for pre-order in the US from Amazon. But at $599, do you still want one?

It’s been almost a year and a half since Asus first demonstrated the Eee Keyboard at CES last year. The computer-in-a-keyboard has all the specs of a 2009 model netbook, including a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP Home Edition. But it’s not a netbook. Instead it’s a keyboard with a computer stuffed inside, plus a wireless HDMI transmitter that lets you use your HDTV as a monitor.

The Eee Keyboard also has a built in 5 inch, 800 x 480 pixel multitouch display for viewing widgets, launching apps, and performing other tasks. The computer has 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetoth 2.1, and 10/100/1000 Ethernet connectivity, a 16GB solid state disk, VGA output, and 3 USB ports.

As far as I’m aware there’s no similar product for under $600. In fact, I’m not sure there’s a similar product at all. But it would probably be cheaper to just buy a PC, stick it next to your TV, and use a wireless keyboard.

No word on when the Eee Keyboard will start shipping, but if you’re still interested you can pre-order one from Amazon today

Sharp updates Netwalker PC-Z1’s keyboard

If a netbook is what you get when you shrink a laptop, the Sharp Netwalker PC-Z1 is what you get when you miniaturize a netbook. But what do you get when you take a Sharp Netwalker and lose the keyboard altogether? Apparently a Sharp Netwalker PC-T1.

Sharp’s latest Netwalker features the same 5 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display as its keyboard-toting sibling. But this model comes sans keyboard, and relies on the stylus and resistive touchscreen for input.

The PC-T1 has a Freescale i.MX515 ARM-based CPU, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, and 8GB of storage space, plus a microSD card slot for additional storage. It has audio, USB, and Mini USB ports, and comes with Ubuntu 9.04 Linux preloaded.

The Sharp NetWalker PC-T1 will be available in Japan in May for 47,000 yen, or about $510 US. No word on an international launch, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this little guy show up at Dynamism and other sites that specialize in making Japanese gadgets available worldwide

Toshiba will bring a dual screen tablet to market running Windows 7

toshiba JournE tablet

Can’t decide whether Google Android or Windows 7 make for a better touchscreen experience on a tablet PC? Why not release two tablets, one with each operating system and see what happens. That appears to be the approach Toshiba is taking.

Reuters reports that Toshiba will bring a dual screen tablet to market running Windows 7.

There will also be a smaller, presumably cheaper model powered by Google Android.

Toshiba is taking a very Apple-like approach to these tablets, claiming that both are built for consuming media rather than creating it. if that’s the case, I have to say, Android probably makes a lot more sense. It’s cheaper, built from the ground up for touch input, and can run on low power ARM-based processors. Adobe and Google are also working to bring Flash support to Android — something which won’t work on the iPad.

On the other hand, Windows 7 is a more powerful OS and offers the possibility of running full Windows apps including Office, Photoshop, or other apps — which might not sound that useful if you’re using an onscreen keyboard and your fingertips. Bu I’m guessing the Windows 7 tablet will have a few USB ports for peripherals, meaning you can use it to read the morning paper over a cup of coffee at the dining room tablet, and then take it to the office and plug in a mouse and keyboard to get some work done.

It’s also possible that the dual screen model will let you prop up the tablet like a laptop and use one screen as a virtual, on-screen keyboard. You know, sort of like that prototype MSI was showing off at CES earlier this year.

Right now we don’t know very much about either tablet, so we’ll just have to guess… what features would you like to see from Toshiba’s new Windows 7 and Android tablets?
